Canvas Transfers

Canvas transfer is a process that transfers the ink layer of a print, poster or photograph onto 100% cotton canvas, creating a finished product with the texture of a painting. Cloudburst Designs in Coquitlam, BC prints onto canvas, but laminates the print, tears off the paper backing, and stretches the canvas before printing it, so that the print can be hung right away, unlike giclée where the print is printed directly onto the canvas.

Canvas Transfer-poster, print or photo

Canvas transfer involves transferring the physical image (you supply) from a print, poster, or photograph onto canvas, creating a finished piece that resembles an original painting. The canvas transfer process involves the following steps

R

Laminating the Print: The print is coated with a UV-protected laminate film (matte or luster finish) to ensure durability.

R

Softening the Paper: The laminated print is soaked to soften its backing paper.

R

Removing the Paper: The softened paper is carefully removed by hand, leaving only the thin ink layer on the laminate film.

R

Applying to Canvas: The laminated ink layer is pressed onto high-quality (100% cotton) canvas, using heat and pressure allowing the texture to transfer into the print.

R

Stretching and Framing: The transferred canvas is stretched onto a wooden frame and finished with tape along the edges, making it ready to hang.

This method results in a canvas piece that mimics the depth and texture of a painting, unlike giclee printing, which directly prints digital images onto canvas.
